Sixty-eight percent of adults and 16.9 percent of children of the United States are obese or overweight; in the African-American community those number increase to 77 percent for African American females, 71 percent for African American males and 21 percent for African American children. Obesity is associated with more than 30 medical conditions including cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension. Poor diet and physical inactivity directly cause over 400,000 deaths in the United States each year and has contributed to the skyrocketing health care cost in our communities.
